Beyond Public Accounting: What You Can Do With a Master’s in Taxation

Posted March 24, 2026 by Daniel Coats

The M.S. in Taxation from Cal State Fullerton’s College of Business and Economics is the perfect match for today’s skills, and the technological focus is opening a demand for new tax professionals with new abilities. The degree is focused on accessibility, affordability and attainability, to meet the needs of today’s working professionals.

Here are five versatile and rewarding paths that are available with a Cal State Fullerton tax master’s degree.

Tax Accounting

Today’s tax accountants use AI-infused spreadsheets to minimize errors, increase efficiency and answer client questions. Thanks to the tech focus of the Cal State Fullerton tax program, you will be equipped for these realities. In addition to careers at organizations ranging from Big Four firms to small businesses, many students also pursue entrepreneurship or launch their own ventures. At CSUF, you’ll have access to dedicated support through the Conrey Center for Entrepreneurship and the Small Business Development Center, providing the guidance, mentorship and resources to help your future career.

Tax Consulting

Many tax consultants work within major companies and organizations, ensuring that tax planning is part of overall strategic decision-making. Many tax consultants work closely with C-Suite executives and play a key role in major business decisions, including hiring, research and development, mergers and acquisitions, and expansions.

Global Taxation

In multinational companies, global tax directors play a critical role in ensuring that operations abroad comply with the tax laws of both the United States and the relevant nations involved. Global tax professionals keep track of the latest tariffs, customs regulations and policies to ensure compliance.

Tax Instructing

Community colleges, universities and corporate education are some avenues for instructing others on tax preparation, accounting and compliance. Many of these roles are flexible and can be good side income in addition to a full-time career in the corporate world or self-employment. Many tax instructors are also involved in providing free tax preparation services for lower-income taxpayers, working through organizations such as Cal State Fullerton’s Volunteer Income Tax Accounting (VITA) program that serves the North Orange County community.

Forensic Accounting

When regulatory agencies work to crack down on tax fraud and evasion, they rely on the expertise of forensic accountants who are versed in the latest technology tools, tax policies and legal regulations. Accounting electives and career fair events featuring federal and state agencies are ways to prepare for this path as a Cal State Fullerton tax student.
