How the M.S. in Information Technology Program is Ideal for Working Professionals

Posted February 11, 2026 by Alicia Bennett

The Cal State Fullerton M.S. in Information Technology (MSIT) program is fully online, allowing for more freedom and flexibility for students to pursue their own education when and where it is most convenient for them. For working professionals, this means that they do not have to worry about making the trip to the classroom a part of their daily schedule, but can instead study at home, at work during their lunch break, and in other flexible settings. It is possible to complete this degree in only 20 months by taking two courses per semester, though students can work at different paces.

Ranked Third in California, the M.S. in Information Technology is Respected

An additional reason to choose the Cal State Fullerton MSIT: It is ranked third in California among online graduate programs ranked by U.S. News & World Report. The degree can help IT professionals advance their careers by educating them in data communications, system development processes, programming concepts, practical cybersecurity knowledge, and more. The faculty are industry experts with deep connections in business and technology, as well as research faculty who can easily guide their students through the field.

The M.S. in Information Technology is a part-time only program, with an emphasis on the accounting and managerial aspects of IT, in addition to technical competence, thus providing a balance of technical and emotional skills that are coveted by today’s employers.

Supporting Career Advancement Through Resources and Networks

The program is a cohort model designed to build professional connections and create a network for support and collaboration with peers and industry leaders alike. Students have the option to choose from two concentrations – either Data Science or IT Management – that opens additional opportunities for their specific career goals and trajectory.

Students can strengthen their career readiness by actively leveraging the college’s extensive professional network of more than 80,000 alumni, recruiters, and professional contacts.

Business Career Services, the college’s in-house career advising center, provides personalized connections to career training such as résumé development and mock interviews, as well as regular career fairs and opportunities to connect with employers to secure internships and career positions.

Your Next Steps to Your IT Management Career

When considering flexibility, affordability and a world-class education respected in the industry, the Cal State Fullerton MSIT program is a great option for working professionals already in information technology looking for ways to expand their opportunities.
