Program History
School of Risk Management and Insurance
The School of Risk Management and Insurance (SRMI), formerly the Center for Insurance Studies (CIS), was established by the Department of Finance in the College of Business and Economics at the beginning of the 1998–1999 academic year. Its mission has always been to attract and educate talented individuals pursuing professional careers in actuarial analysis, claims, financial planning, marketing, risk management, portfolio management, sales, technology, and underwriting. Since its founding, the school has benefited from strong industry support, with operating strategies shaped in collaboration with industry professionals. The Insurance and Financial Services program created by SRMI has since become one of the six tracks in the Finance Department.
In 2004, SRMI and the Mathematics Department jointly launched the Actuary Program, with Professor Jeff Jolley overseeing its development.
In 2016, the concentration officially started.
In Fall 2019, CIS was elevated to the School of Risk Management and Insurance (SRMI).
Today, SRMI is proud to be one of only three programs in California recognized by the Society of Actuaries as a University and College with Actuarial Programs – Advanced Curriculum (UCAP-AC), making CSUF one of the distinguished institutions preparing students for advanced actuarial careers.
