
The Department of Finance at Cal State Fullerton’s College of Business and Economics – for years a powerhouse in scholarly research – is welcoming two new faculty members for the 2024-2025 academic year.
Noman Hossain and Yang Bai will be joining the department’s faculty as assistant professors this fall.
We asked each of these men a bit about their backgrounds, research interest and a “fun fact” slice of life.

Introducing Md Noman Hossain
Before joining CSUF, Md Noman Hossain worked as an assistant professor of finance at Central Washington University since fall 2021. He earned his Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with a specialization in finance in 2021, an MBA in finance and ERP from Lamar University, and a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Dhaka.
Hossain’s research interests include corporate finance, corporate governance, behavioral finance and investments.
His research papers have been published in the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Corporate Finance, European Financial Management, R&D Management, and the International Journal of Managerial Finance.
He has also presented at top finance conferences and academic venues including the AFA, FMA, EFA, SFA and SWFA.
Though new to Cal State Fullerton, Hossain has many years of teaching experience, including multiple finance courses at various schools such as Introductory Financial Management, Corporate Finance, Financial Modeling and Analysis, International Finance, Investments, Wellington Investment Fund, and Security Industry Essentials, taught in both online and in-person modalities.
Apart from these academic experiences, Hossain worked in a private commercial bank for almost three and a half years and served in a managerial position in multiple divisions including the credit and foreign exchange department.
In his leisure time, Hossain loves traveling to new places and exploring new foods and cultures. He also loves fishing, watching soccer and playing cricket. He has a passion for cooking! Having lived away from home for the past 21 years, he is an excellent chef!
Introducing Yang Bai
Yang Bai’s research interests include investments, machine learning in finance, mergers and acquisitions, and regulatory enforcements.
He has garnered several notable awards for his research, including third place in the 2020 Crowell Memorial Prize, a leading research competition in investments, and the Best Paper Award from the 2022 Boca Corporate Finance and Governance Conference.
Bai’s recent paper examining the SEC’s initiation of investigation due to founder CEOs was a Best Paper Award semifinalist at the 2023 Financial Management Association’s Annual Meeting.
In the past several years, Bai has taught a variety of finance courses at different levels, including business finance and financial modeling. He also taught real estate appraisal, for which he received an outstanding teaching award at his previous institution. Starting this fall, Bai will be offering introduction to investments (FIN340) at Cal State Fullerton’s College of Business and Economics.
Bai is a certified financial risk manager (FRM). Before returning to academia, Bai was part of the data science team at a leading global insurance provider, where he led projects on advanced modeling, machine learning, and analytics infrastructures.
He earned his doctorate degree in finance from the University of Missouri. He also holds a master’s degree in statistics and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Georgia. In his spare time, Bai enjoys gym exercises, outdoor activities and exploring new technologies.
