Welcome to the School of Risk Management and Insurance

Established in 1998, the School of Risk Management and Insurance (SRMI) began as the Center for Insurance Studies (CIS) and has since educated students from around the world to become future global leaders in insurance and risk management. CIS was elevated to the School of Risk Management and Insurance in Fall 2019.

As the largest provider of risk management talent in California, SRMI educates, empowers, and provides in-depth training to students, ensuring they are well prepared for the industry's evolving challenges and broader societal needs.

The School was recognized as one of Best’s Review’s Top 6 Insurance Programs Nationwide and is one of only 20 institutions worldwide to receive the Global Centers of Insurance Excellence (GCIE) designation from the International Insurance Society (IIS).

Working professionals have the opportunity to meet continuing education needs through the California Department of Insurance certified events held by the School. The School’s Actuary Leadership Forum, Insurance Day (iDay), SLA E&S (Excess and Surplus Lines) Day, Scholarship Gala, Insurance Forum, Risk Management Awareness Week, and the SRMI Alumni Reunion events provide a direct connection between students and industry employers.

Between 2007 and 2021, the School was a leading insurance research institute for Asian insurance carriers due to its Insurance Competency Research Project. European and U.S. investors used the School’s data for decision-making, while Chinese regulators utilized it to develop the National Insurance Competency Blue Book.
