Cal State Fullerton made it into the NCAA men’s basketball tournament for only the fourth time in its history in 2022. Titans around the world watched the March 18 matchup between CSUF and basketball powerhouse Duke. While Duke won 78-61, even veteran observers were surprised by Fullerton’s strong showing.
The star player was forward E.J. Anosike. The 6-foot-7-inch Nigerian American MBA student from New Jersey previously played for Sacred Heart University before transferring to CSUF as an undergrad senior in 2020.
We recently talked with Anosike about his career and life – both on and off the court:
This year, the Titans made their fourth appearance in the NCAA tournament. What was it like being part of this team?
The experience was one of a kind, especially winning a championship and making history. This was my last season playing college basketball, and I wanted it to be special. I’m grateful for my teammates, who made this experience so meaningful. We overcame a lot of adversity, and we came together to win a championship. The biggest highlight for me was waving and carrying my Nigerian flag after we won the Big West Conference Championship. I am proud that I was able to represent my heritage and become a staple for young Nigerian basketball players around the world.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the CSUF men’s basketball team?
I enjoyed helping my teammates grow on and off the court to become successful people. That meant a lot to me because I took the responsibility of being a leader for the team, and my teammates trusted my leadership.
What motivated you to pursue an MBA?
I am pursuing an MBA degree so I can learn how to create opportunities for others to be successful. Coming from the Igbo Tribe in southeast Nigeria, my people specialize in entrepreneurship and investing. That inspired me to pursue business, so I can create a pathway to bring change and help the next generation. I started A55Life Management to help push my mission of helping kids by teaching them the values of being successful in life. I mentor a lot of young college athletes and high school athletes around the country. I guide them through the process and challenges that comes with being a student athlete. In addition, I help assist their marketing and brand partnerships using their image. This is a topic I enjoy teaching kids about while entering into college.
What are your career plans post-graduation?
After I graduate, I will be playing in the NBA as a professional basketball player. I also plan to expand and grow my management company to partner with brands all over the world. And I’d like to launch a nonprofit to help African children have the opportunity to receive education in the U.S. through sports and academics. My goal is to inspire the youth and motivate the masses. I believe I was put here for a reason and that I am meant to bring positivity and light into the world. That is what I’m dedicating my life to.
Would you have any words of inspiration or encouragement to your fellow Titans?
To thine own self, stay true. Have a dream and protect it, never stop chasing it. Even when no one believes, you believe in yourself, and you will make everyone a believer. #Itstoolatetofail
Congrats to E.J. and all the Titan athletes! CSUF is proud of your success and rooting you on!
