Five Tips to Succeed in CSUF’s M.S. in Accountancy Program

Posted April 02, 2026 by Daniel Coats

The Cal State Fullerton M.S. in Accountancy is among the best opportunities for an attainable, accessible and affordable graduate accounting education on the West Coast. Featuring dual accreditation in both business and accounting from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the College of Business and Economics is one of a kind in the Orange County region. A Titan accounting education offers a distinctive advantage for students preparing to lead in a rapidly evolving field.

Student success in the CSUF master’s in accounting program can strengthen their success by following these five key strategies.

  1. Build a Strong Foundation Before Classes Start. If you are currently working in accounting, start honing your skills now – even before you start grad school – by working with your employer to take advantage of mentorships offered through your workplace. Many employers even offer tuition reimbursement. Develop effective study habits and time management abilities. Read bestsellers on the latest business and tech trends. Begin expanding your professional network through in-person connections and a well-developed LinkedIn profile.
  2. Plan Ahead for Readings and Projects. A multi-tab notebook can work wonders in staying organized in grad school and retaining what you’ve learned post-graduation. Set up an outline of your schedule to manage school, work and personal obligations. And hone your speed-reading abilities to get the gist of long texts in a short time.
  3. Explore Accounting Tools and Software. Cal State Fullerton’s accounting program emphasizes the integration of advanced technologies; students are encouraged to gain early exposure. Even before your first class, start using the free versions of publicly available spreadsheet tools that are more sophisticated and AI-integrated than Excel. Power BI and Tableau Public are among the options.
  4. Utilize Study Groups. Once you’re here as a student, connect with your professor and peers to arrange or join an existing study group. The best size is usually three to five members to get a mix of insights and perspectives while still being small enough to brainstorm and engage.
  5. Treat the M.S. in Accountancy Like a Professional Job. Give it your all! Focus on your studies and your internships or internship search as if it were your full-time job. That will ensure maximum effectiveness and make it more likely that accounting will be your full-time career going forward.
