Landy Waight ’21: Finding an Identity and Career Through Titan Radio

Cal State Fullerton is home to the nonprofit Titan Radio, a worldwide radio broadcast with a wide range of music, talk shows and podcasts representing the CSUF Titan experience. It also serves as a stepping stone into communications or entertainment industry careers for the many students who lend their talents to the radio station.

Landy Waight ’21 (entertainment and hospitality management), like many Titans, was unaware of Titan Radio during much of his undergraduate experience. He learned of the station through Angie Linzaga ’20 (marketing and broadcast journalism), a fellow Titan and friend who was interning at Waight’s workplace, The House of Blues in Anaheim. She was Titan Radio’s marketing and promotions director, the role that Waight now holds.

“She told me to stop by the station sometime to learn more. Soon after, she gave me a tour of the station, and I fell in love with the environment. Everyone I met was extremely kind and cool. There was also music playing in the station from the DJ who was live on air at the time,” Waight recalls. “I’m very passionate about music, so I thought that was awesome. I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my time at CSUF being a part of the Titan Radio community.”

Joining the station as a marketing and music intern in January 2020, Waight advanced to his current role in August 2020.

The connections gained through involvement at Titan Radio, as well as the skills developed there, have been a high point for Waight.

“There is so much diversity in the station – people who listen to all kinds of music, people who report news and sports, faculty members, transfer students, alumni – all from different backgrounds, and they all provide different perspectives on education, politics and just life in general,” he says.

“Along with the people I’ve met, I also really appreciate how Titan Radio has allowed me to grow skills in areas I hope to use once I graduate. I’ve practiced real-world scenarios that involve planning, organizing and communicating. This became especially true after we went online during the COVID pandemic.”

The Life of a Titan Radio Director

Currently, Waight supervises two interns, Daniel Lozano and Savanah Terrazas, and they meet virtually each week to plan social media content, which often includes promotions and ticket giveaways, as well as future project plans.

Waight also connects with the entire Titan Radio staff each week, including the campus outreach, program, music and website teams.

“While these meetings are very productive, we do like to have some fun. Each meeting we pick a theme for our Zoom backgrounds, such as our favorite musician, color or TV show,” he says. “My last weekly meeting occurs on Fridays, and this one is with other directors for Titan Communications. We check in on what we’re all working on in our respective organizations and what we have planned for the following week.”

And when not in meetings, Waight is busy organizing the station’s content calendar, creating graphics, interacting with sponsors and making memes.

After graduating, Waight hopes to put his experience to use in the music industry, either in radio or live entertainment. And as for his ultimate goal, “it is to own and manage a concert venue. That’s probably my dream job. I’ll call it Landy’s or something like that,” he says.

Finding Your Titan Radio

Whether your focus is entertainment, communications or a different field entirely, there are always opportunities to get involved at Cal State Fullerton, even while the university is operating primarily virtually. Waight encourages all of his fellow Titans to find a club, activity or involvement as soon as they arrive at CSUF.

Not only is it essential for professional development, but it builds connections that can last a lifetime.

“I wish I joined Titan Radio on my first day at CSUF. My first couple of years on campus were very boring until I walked into the station. It also felt like all the stressful stuff that comes with being a student became less stressful once I found a community to be a part of,” he says.

“It’s very important to build relationships as a college student because you never know when you might meet someone who will help you land a job you want. But make sure the relationships are genuine and not just for networking purposes. Don’t be afraid to reach out and talk to people. As an introvert, I understand that it could be nerve-racking initiating conversations with strangers. But, maybe the next person you talk to is the one who helps you find your Titan Radio.”
