Students napping at the Pollak Library is one of the favorite themes of CSUF Naps.
If you are a Cal State Fullerton student who spends any time on social media, you no doubt have come across a post from CSUFNAPS, likely the most popular CSUF-centric meme out there. CSUFNAP’s Instagram account features images of students napping on couches in Mihaylo Hall, benches in the Central Quad and pretty much anywhere else on campus where there is room. Napping is a part of our university’s commuter culture, which is why CSUFNAPS is so funny and relatable. We caught up with the anonymous proprietor of the infamous Instagram account and asked a few questions.

Tell us a little about your academic and professional background?
I’m a business major who has two part-time jobs. I guess you could say I help create happiness for one. In the other, I just bring food to rich golfers.
What was the motivation behind starting CSUFNAPS?
The motivation behind starting CSUFNAPS? I’m not sure, because I wasn’t the one who started it. A friend of mine did for what I assume was just for fun. My friend graduated in 2014 and passed the account on. I keep it going as something fun to do, a way to make people laugh. It also does feel good to see people enjoy something you’ve done!
As of today, CSUFNAPS has 4,450 followers on Instagram who tune in to your perfectly captured photos and hilariously witty observations. I particularly liked the few times you recently used song lyrics and changed words around. Do you see yourself continuing to work on CSUFNAPS in the future?
Haha! Yeah, I’m a big music fan and sometimes the lyrics just come to me, but it is a little weird typing it out and wondering if people are going to understand what’s going on! I do hope to see CSUFNAPS continue in the future. I have yet to decide whether I will keep doing it after my graduation. I would love for it to expand and the following to grow. I’ve created a Facebook account for it but I haven’t put as much time into growing that page as I’d like to. I would also like for the page to become more interactive. We did a giveaway once and we also worked with Mike Mahi ’83 and his intern to organize a flash nap in Mihaylo that resulted in an article in the Orange County Register.

Do you have a favorite nap post?
It’s hard to pick a favorite. But one of the best is the flash nap because so many people showed up with all sorts of outfits on and two people even brought chairs with them to sleep in! The other one features three or four people sleeping in the same aisle in the library with the caption was “even though I nap in the shadow of finals, I will fear no tests.” I was pretty proud of that one and it just worked really well leading up to finals week.
Tell us about something interesting or funny that has happened to you as a result of being the person behind CSUFNAPS, which is probably the most popular meme at CSUF.
Last year I did a series of photos every day leading up to the new Star Wars movie release, with the titles of the first six episodes, with episode seven planned for the opening day. I thought it was fun, but unfortunately, someone who was the subject of one of the photos was not happy about it and not so politely asked me to take it down. I obliged and now the Star Wars series is not complete. Another funny thing that happened is when someone actually caught me napping. They snapchatted me to their friend who in turn happened to be one of my friends and she saved the picture and then sent it to me, so I had to post it! There’s your hint at who I am! I’m somewhere in one of the pictures!
I’m honored to hear that we are possibly the most popular meme on campus! With less than 5,000 followers, we have less than 10% of the total student population. We definitely have a lot of room for growth!

Have you ever been approached about commercial opportunities around CSUFNAPS?
I have not been contacted about any commercial opportunities, although I definitely wish I had. I have dreamed of being able to make money off this account. Who wouldn’t want to make money from posting funny pictures on Instagram?
