Connect With Students and Alumni on Portfolium, the LinkedIn of Cal State Fullerton

Posted October 27, 2016 by Daniel Coats
Portfolium, which provides a forum for Cal State Fullerton students and alumni to highlight their academic and professional achievements.

Portfolium offers an online community for the Cal State Fullerton family to connect and network. The site is open to all majors and offers a LinkedIn-style profile, as well as a space to upload school and work samples.

Cal State Fullerton students and alumni have exclusive access to a career network known as Portfolium, which provides a forum for academic and work samples of Titans. Here are some tips on how to use the network for your career development.

In 2015, the California State University network reached an agreement with Portfolium, a free digital profile platform, to provide an online professional development forum for students and alumni. With nearly 40,000 students and 215,000 alumni, Cal State Fullerton has a massive network across all major industries in Southern California and around the world.

Here are seven things you should know about the Cal State Fullerton Portfolium network.

  1. You can upload your résumé, completed class assignments or internship projects.

Uploads can be added as attachments. If you are including any group projects, however, be sure to check with fellow group members before uploading. Also be sure to remove any private information, such as your CWID, from the documents. You may want to remove your physical address as well. You can download your profile as a pdf to easily share it in-person or by email to prospective employers.

  1. You can connect with fellow students and alumni.

Similar to the “connect” feature on LinkedIn, you can add people to your personal network. Start by searching for your classmates and alumni you know from classes, internships or the community. You can add them if they are on Portfolium.

  1. Log-in through Facebook or LinkedIn

Don’t want to create more passwords? Streamline your access by logging-in to Portfolium using your Facebook or LinkedIn account. This is also a good chance to update your Facebook and LinkedIn to ensure they both are up-to-date and professional.

  1. Add your skills

On the left side of the “Portfolio” tab, you can add skills ranging from traits such as problem-solving skills or great communicator to more quantifiable abilities such as computer programming. Having a profile full of skills makes you stand out.

  1. Use good profile and background images

Your profile image is your personal photo. While not required, profiles with a personal photo get more attention. Be sure to select a professional headshot. You can get your photo taken at Mihaylo Career Services, which hosts regular free headshot workshops to help students have professional images on LinkedIn, Portfolium and other online platforms. The next event is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 7, at 5:30 p.m. in SGMH 3230.

Your background image appears on top of your page and could consist of a nature picture, a panoramic view of campus or a tasteful image about one of your hobbies.

  1. Add a little of your personality

A career portfolio should be professional, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be dry. Add presentations you’ve given in student clubs, include your photography collection or showcase sports competitions you’ve won. Including your hobbies can help you build a network with students and alumni who have similar interests.

  1. Add multimedia

Video and graphics are the watchword of contemporary social media. Include PowerPoints with embedded videos, short audio or video pieces, or charts. Not only does it attract attention to your profile, but it also shows what you are capable of.
