Finding a Common Ground: Standardizing the Assessment of Projects with Multiple End Products
This workshop focuses on the assessment methods and rubrics for implementing year-long project-based history courses in the Elementary through Secondary levels, that also meet the requirements of the State Standards as well as the criteria for the nationally recognized National History Day program. The presenters have been successful in the incorporation of project-based learning with consistently outstanding results over a period of seven years. The workshop presents the assessment methodology for these courses and gives opportunity for the audience to practice with actual student-produced projects.
The workshop is designed for professors of Education who are guiding student teachers in Social Studies and might consider assignments in project-based learning. It will also be useful for professors in other fields who are seeking methods to assess quarter- or semester-long project assignments.
Upon completion of this workshop, attendees will be able to:
1. Break down a major project assignment into small assessable portions and develop a rubric for each one of these portions.
2. Develop a rubric for the fair and equal assessment of finished projects that will allow for variety in final formats.
3. Identify areas in the State Standards that are met by the projects described in the workshop.
4. Move toward the incorporation of long-term history projects as assignments for student teachers in credentialing programs and for undergraduates in other fields of study.
Dr. Sandra Yang is currently a Lecturer in History and Music at Cal Poly Pomona. She taught at the secondary level for nine years. She has had much experience with project-based learning, and has participated actively in the National History program, both as coach and judge at County, State, and National levels.
