Mission and Vision

Mission Statement

Our mission is to offer high-quality accounting educational programs that help students to prepare for careers in the accounting profession and that are relevant to a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students.  In recognizing its role in society, the Department of Accounting also strives to advance accounting education and knowledge through basic, applied and pedagogical research and other scholarly activities and to promote valuable associations with business and professional communities. Vision

The Department of Accounting provides an exemplary accounting program in Orange County that is recognized for its excellence in preparing students who are knowledgeable in the use of conceptual, theoretical and practical applications of financial and non-financial information to reach successful business solutions. The Department also seeks to recruit and retain faculty who do high-quality research that benefits students and professionals. Further, we establish and maintain close community involvement through faculty and student interaction with the business community as well as bring former students and professionals back into the classroom.

Undergraduate Education: To provide a competency-based, quality education in accounting that qualifies accounting majors for entry-level accounting positions in private industry, government, public accounting, or not-for-profit organizations. The undergraduate education will also provide a foundation for advancement through professional certification and success in graduate studies.

Graduate Education: To provide advanced professional education that strengthens the skills of graduate students in both general and technical competencies and enhances the student's ability to enter or continue in leadership roles and develop increased professional responsibilities in private industry, government, public accounting, or for not-for-profit organizations.

Educational Support: To serve the educational needs of the College of Business and Economics as well as other schools and departments of the University by teaching various accounting subjects as may be required or requested within the resource constraints of the Department.

Community Outreach: To support student and alumni activities, and encourage outreach activities that address accounting needs of the local, regional and global communities. This includes developing strong on-going relationships with local and regional employers, community colleges, and supporters of an enhanced academic environment.

Enhanced Intellectual Capital: To enhance the intellectual capital of its faculty by encouraging and supporting basic research and applied research as well as faculty development activities. This includes support of active participation and leadership in local, regional, and national academic and professional accounting organizations.
