Part II Curriculum Questions

What are the different majors offered in the CBE?
Three Bachelor of Arts degrees are offered in the CBE: the BA in Business Administration, the BA in International Business and the BA in Economics. Within the business administration major, you may specialize in one of nine concentrations: accounting, business economics, entertainment and tourism, entrepreneurship, finance, information systems, management, or marketing. In the international business majors, you may specialize in one of five foreign languages: French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, or Spanish.

What is pre-business? Pre-international business? Pre-economics?
All new students to the CBE are classified "pre". After you have completed all of the lower division "pre" courses with grades of at least "C", you can then apply to your concentration.

How and when can I apply to the upper-division major?
You apply to your concentration in the Business Advising (LH 731) during the semester in which you are finishing the last of your "pre courses. Make sure you bring verification (transcripts or report cards) of all "pre" courses taken at schools other than CSUF. Please click here for further information.

Can I take courses in my concentration if I'm still in prebusiness?
All concentration courses are restricted and only open to students who are officially declared in their concentration.

Can I do more than one concentration?
You may complete as many different concentrations as you choose, so long as meet the minimum unit requirements of each different concentration.

Can I change from one concentration to another?
Once you have moved out of "pre", you can change your concentration at any time by simply filling out a Change of Major form. You can obtain this form in LH 731.

How many units do I need to graduate?
All students in the College are required to complete a minimum of 120 units for their bachelor's degree.

Is the business degree at CSUF a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science?
All undergraduate business programs at CSUF lead to a Bachelor of Arts degree.

What is the MQE?
The MQE is the "Mathematics Qualifying Examination." You must achieve a passing score on the MQE before you can register for Mathematics 130 or 135. Test dates and registration information is available in the current Class Schedule.

Are there any exceptions or exemptions to the MQE?
To be exempt from the MQE, students must have:
For MATH 130 & 135: a C or better in MATH 115 or 125 at CSUF or equivalent course. For MATH 150A: a "C" or better in MATH 125 or equivalent course. Any score on the AP exam for Math sections A&B or B&C.

If you have taken an equivalent math course at another college, you must submit a copy of your transcripts or course grade and a course description to the Mathematics Department, MH-154, prior to registering for classes.

If I have already taken a calculus course at another school or plan to take an approved equivalent at another school, do I still have to take the MQE?

No. The MQE is only required if you are taking calculus at CSUF.

Part III Grades/Probation

Do I have to repeat a course if I get a grade of "D" or "C-"?
All business and international core courses must be completed with grades of "C" (2.0) or better. The concentration courses in the accounting, information systems, management science and foreign language concentrations require "C's" or better. The courses within the other concentrations must be completed with "C" averages.

What is the "Repetition of Course Policy"?
Undergraduate students may repeat courses at CSUF for which "C-", "D" or failing grades were earned. After repeating the course, only the most recently earned grade and grade points will be used in computing the grade point average. The original grade will still remain on the academic record, but will not be included in the GPA. The Repetition of Course Policy can only be applied to the first 16 units of repeated coursework.

How and when do I apply for the Repetition of Course Policy?
You apply for the Repetition of Course Policy by completing the appropriate form obtained from the Admissions and Records Information Center (LH 114). The form should be submitted after the course has been repeated.

Can I retake a course at the community college?
Equivalent courses may be retaken at a community college, however, the Repetition of Course Policy will not apply. The Repetition of Course Policy can only apply if the course is repeated at CSUF.

Do I have to repeat a course in the immediately following semester?
Under the Repetition of Course Policy, courses can be repeated at any time. However, in most cases it is advisable to repeat required courses as soon as possible.

How many times can I repeat a course?
Any course can be repeated any number of times. However, under the Repetition of Course Policy, each time the course is repeated, the units count against the 16 unit limit.

What does academic probation mean?
Academic probation means that your CSUF or cumulative grade point average has fallen below 2.0. If your record does not improve or if your grade point balance falls below a certain point, you may be academically disqualified.

What happens if I'm disqualified?
Disqualification means that you are no longer eligible to take courses at CSUF. Under certain circumstances, you may appeal to regain eligibility. For further information, please contact Roberto Coronel (657)-278-7328.

What do I do if I disagree with a final grade?
If you do not agree with a final grade, you should speak to the instructor. If the instructor made a clerical error, administrative error, or where the instructor reevaluated the original course assignments and discovers an error, the instructor may submit a change of grade.

Part IV Grad Check Questions

What is a grad check?
The grad check is a formal audit of your degree requirements. All students must complete a grad check in order to become a graduation candidate.

When do I apply for a grad check?
A grad check should be requested at least one year prior to your anticipated graduation date. (for example, to graduate in June 2008, you should apply by June 2007)

How do I apply for a grad check?
You apply for a grad check by completing the appropriate form obtained from Admissions and Records (LH 114) and then paying the $115.00 grad check fee at the Cashier's.

What happens after I pay the $115.00 fee?
Admissions and Records will first audit your records. After their review, they will send you your grad check papers. Once you receive your papers, you will need to take your forms to the Business Advising Center , LH 731, where your major requirements will be reviewed.

How many courses can I take in summer and still participate in the graduation ceremonies?
As long as you complete all requirements by the end of August, you may participate in the ceremonies. There is no official limit to how many units you can take in summer, however, we do not advise that you attempt more than one course per summer session.

When is commencement?
Commencement ceremony is usually held the last weekend of May.

When will I receive my diploma?
Diplomas are not issued at the commencement ceremonies. Diplomas are usually mailed a month or two after you complete your final courses. An official transcript verifying degree completion is usually available a month after you complete your final courses.

What GPA do I need to graduate with honors?
cum laude...............................3.50 - 3.74
magna cum laude.................3.75 - 3.89
summa cum laude................3.90 - 4.00

Part V Registration Questions

How do I add a business course?
During the first week of the semester, you add business courses through TITAN registration, either over the telephone or WEB. During the second week, you need to secure the consent and an electronic permit from the instructor. Business courses cannot be added after the second week of the semester.

How do I drop a business course?
Business and economics courses can be dropped through TITAN registration anytime during the first three weeks. No signatures are required.

What is "stop-out"?
In most cases, undergraduate students may be absent for one semester and still maintain your continuing student status. Registration status and catalog year rights are not changed. Exceptions are academically disqualified students and students with foreign visas.

How many units can I take?
During TITAN registration, the maximum number of units that you can take is usually set at 16. Once the semester begins, you may add up to 19.

How many units do I have to take to be a full-time undergraduate student?
Most agencies define full-time status as 12 or more units per semester.

How many classes can I take in summer?
Students are advised not to take more than one course per summer session. Summer classes are taught in a very fast mode and require a lot of outside work.

What does it mean when the computer tells me that a course is restricted?
Restricted courses are generally only open to students who have moved out of "pre" and declared their concentration. If you are still "pre" and try to enroll in a restricted course, the computer will not let you in.

What does "corequisite" mean?
A corequisite is a requirement that can be taken prior to or concurrently with another course.

How many units can be transferred from a community college?
CSUF will accept up to 70 units of transferable coursework from the community colleges.
