“Entering the December of Our Careers –
As he received the ICON award recently at the ESPY’s, legendary Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully said, “You know, God gave us memories so we could have roses in December. And in the December of my years, I have collected so many roses and cherished each and every one of them. My work was never, ever a burden. I consider it always a blessing.”
As he has transitioned into his new role as the former Dodgers broadcaster, he has left a legacy that will never be matched. Yet his successor Joe Davis, by many accounts, has picked up and is doing a stellar job as his successor. Davis is not trying to replace Scully. He is smart enough to know that he will never be able to do that. What he is doing successfully, however, is he is respecting and honoring the legacy and the legend of Scully, while bringing youth, energy, professionalism, and a new perspective to the craft of calling professional baseball games.
As the “now” generation prepares for the new Januarys in their lives, the “next” generation has a lot to learn, and also a tremendous amount of value to add to the organization, as well.
