Marketing is an integral part of any sound business with an eye on growth. Knowing who your customers are and the best way to reach them is usually not an easy answer, even if you think it is. Many of our clients are astonished when they learn that they have been overlooking key market segments for years; market segments that provide larger margins and more frequent business. Correctly aligning a business’ marketing goals with its overall strategy is no easy feat however. Using the Small Business Institute (SBI) consulting methodology, the CSUF Student-led Business Consulting Program has advised hundreds of clients on how to improve their overall marketing strategy. The student projects have included the following:
Our program has won many awards and pictured above is the most recent team of CSUF Student Consultants to win a national award for their work. They developed a detailed marketing strategy for their client, The Ticket Group, which has helped them improve their marketing efforts in the following areas: email marketing, customer retention efforts, advertising, VIP programming, search engine optimization and social media.
Even though each of our teams cannot win national awards they all follow the same methodology, which has been fine-tuned over the thirty years that Cal State Fullerton has been doing consulting projects.
With a CSUF Consulting Team clients are introduced to innovative marketing strategies and develop a 360˚ understanding of their market and its needs. “Knowledge is power” is viewed by many as clichéd but we believe that it has never been truer than it is in today’s creative world. The way in which people interact with companies and their brands has gone through many revolutions in the past generation and the pace of change is only increasing. Only the most agile businesses will continue to thrive in the future.
Many intelligent entrepreneurs have engaged with CSUF Consulting Teams to prepare their businesses for future growth. Each team is comprised of four to six students majoring in business. These students have studied cutting edge strategies and many of them are, or plan on being, entrepreneurs themselves. They are eager to put into action all they have learned from school and their life experiences for the benefit of their client.
Assisting each CSUF Consulting Team are the team’s professor and a mentor, both with a history of excellence in the private sector and/or in academia. For each project the students spend the majority of the semester crafting a detailed strategic plan tailored to their client’s specific needs. Closely interacting with their client, the students inform their marketing plan with insights from the client, customers and marketing experts. By the end of the semester, the students have developed a thorough strategic report detailing ways that the client can enhance their current marketing efforts.
A Consulting Project with a CSUF Student Team has a small fee and our past clients definitely believe the small cost of a project was worth it. Similar projects done by large firms can easily cost 10 times more and there are none of the extra benefits of engaging with a CSUF Team. Clients have ultimately hired the students that did the consulting work for them and others become in the CSUF Entrepreneurship program by attending educational events and by becoming a mentor in our program.
Our best clients have a contagious passion for entrepreneurship and fall in love with the energy and creativity of our students. In many ways, they see themselves in the students and actively work with them in the production of the consulting reports. It is this human element that breaks down the barriers and allows for the creation of truly insightful consulting reports that may have never happened if you had hired a large professional consulting group instead.
